A little 3D experiment

↑ Quick experimental 3D video I made for Shohmo’s “Places” (chopped n screwed remix). I have no affiliation with Shlohmo (besides lovin his west coast gangster shit); this is merely a slightly tripped-out experimental render of some recent 3D footage. Basically just wanted to see how multiple layers of 3D looked; how multiple filters interacted. Nothing too crazy, but it kinda worked and I’m therefore sharing it… Get a free pair of 3D shades here →

For those that don’t know, check out Shlohmo and the Wedidit crew, they’re making some really laid back music: wediditcollective.com/

3D video of the Sun (and coronal mass ejections)

Whoa whoa whoa… check out this “full disk observation” of the sun (at EUVI 304 Angstroms) which was created by STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory), which is “the third mission in NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Probes program (STP). This two-year mission will employ two nearly identical space-based observatories — one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind — to provide the first-ever stereoscopic measurements to study the Sun and the nature of its coronal mass ejections, or CMEs.” Higher resolution download available here.

The flares you see in the video are what the program is actually studying (there’s an especially sweet one in the middle of the lower half around ~42 seconds in). Those are CME’s:

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are powerful eruptions that can blow up to 10 billion tons of the Sun’s atmosphere into interplanetary space. Traveling away from the Sun at speeds of approximately one million mph (1.6 million kph), CMEs can create major disturbances in the interplanetary medium and trigger severe magnetic storms when they collide with Earth’s magnetosphere.

Large geomagnetic storms directed towards Earth can damage and even destroy satellites, are extremely hazardous to Astronauts when outside of the protection of the Space Shuttle performing Extra Vehicular Activities (EVAs), and they have been known to cause electrical power outages.

Pretty heady stuff, but man oh man, the images they’re getting are amazing. A lot of what you’ll see in STEREO’s gallery are kind of old (~2007), but I reckon another batch will be coming out soon. As always, you’ll need a pair of anaglyph glasses to see these in 3D. Get your free pair now →

free 3d glasses and pushing things forward

Another quick post announcing some newness of mine: free-3d-glasses.com is now live and ready to send YOU a free pair of anaglyph 3d glasses. That’s right, fo’ free!

The property itself comes from a pretty simple place: I’m creating more and more 3D content but almost no one actually has glasses to get the effect. As I explain a bit more about on the site:

I want you to see what I and others are creating, so beyond giving away high-end 3D electronics gear (which I will in an upcoming giveaway — stay tuned!), the easiest way to do that is give away the tried-n-true red-n-blue 3D shades (technically red and cyan).

As you’ve no doubt seen in the news and/or your movie/home theater, an incredible amount of technology has been/is being created to view 3D content. But the problem persists: there’s no easy way to see 3D media online without crossing your eyes or spending some loot. The technology’s quickly getting better and more pervasive, and hopefully these old-school red-n-blue shades will some day be moot. But in the meantime, sign up for your free pair, I’ll mail them to you right away, and lets help push 3D forward.

free-3d-glasses.comI’m launching the main site after a very successful soft launch of the partnership service for up-n-coming solo musician Kyle Patrick (also lead singer of The Click Five). The basic idea: we’ll create a vanity subsite for your upcoming 3D project (your summer blockbuster marketing campaign, or in Kyle’s case, an upcoming 3D crowdfunding/music video campaign). My backend deals with all the data capture and actual fulfillment (worldwide!), and your audience gets to see your 3D content. Easy, progressive, awesome.

Have an upcoming 3D project that could use some special love like this? Email me at [email protected] to find out more. In the meantime, check out the first partner campaign (already with thousands of signups and deliveries in 20+ countries).

Oh, and by all means go signup for your free pair →

version numero dos and a little thing called the third dimension

I’m pleased to announce that you’re looking at version 2.0 of zdlldz.com. This version brings a lot of newness, so poke around a bit and (try to) enjoy! In an effort to clear the deck for future endeavors, I’ve deleted most of the old content (there wasn’t much anyway); I’ll be adding a lot more very soon.

Beyond the visual refresh, this relaunch is mostly about zdlldz.com/3d. As I’ll write (much, much) more about in the future, I’ve recently gone all-in on 3D. “All-in” as in everything I’m doing right now is 3D-related (photography, film, games, and even web development). That’s not to say that I won’t/don’t mess with the ol’ 2D, but I have big plans and bigger ideas for my future in 3D. If we’re friends in the real world, you’ve no doubt seen some of my stuff in person or heard me go on and on about how sweet 3D is/can be; hopefully now I’ll have the platform to start showing more of you said sweetness.

I know there are haters out there that argue 3D’s faults and its fadishness and this and that — and I see your points to an extent. But I’ll always argue — and will, on this site — that its positives far outweigh anything perceived as hate-worthy. There’s room for traditional content and there’s room for 3D, and I’m here trying to push independent 3D content creation forward. Things are juuuust starting to get interesting, and I’m thinking about the (far) future; we have a long way to go, but here we are, in it. The future is now!

So, with that, take a look around and be sure to check out some 3D photography galleries. I’ve got a ton of original (as in, my own) 3D video waiting in the wings, and my next step is to get it all edited and live for you to see.

What’s that? You don’t have 3D glasses? Well well well… you should probably take a gander at free-3d-glasses.com — this is also one of my sites and a new project of mine. The basic gist: give me your email address and your actual address and I’ll mail you a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses (name optional, I won’t spam!). For free! Yessss!!!

So, big things coming! I still have a lot of cleaning up to do, so please be patient as I phase out the old and bring in the new… Thanks for stopping by and come back soon to see some more goodness.
